Coming from a big family it was always important that there was enough food and food that everybody liked. My mother knew every ones favorite dishes and things that we didnââ¬â¢t like. She is an amazing cook and always had me help especially with holiday dinners one in particular always sticks out in my flood of memories. It was thanksgiving and I was eleven my mother woke me up at seven in the morning and told me I had to help her cook. She never did this before I used to wake up later and maybe cut a few carrots and celery for the stuffing she would make on the stove this was different. I complained like a bratty preteen and asked why I was waking up and she told me that I had to learn to cook one day and why not on thanksgiving. Forcing my self down the staircase into the kitchen and sitting on one of the many stools surrounding the island. She pulled out the twenty-eight pound turkey and rinsed it off and pulled all the giblets out. I remember trying not to grimace because my mother was one to tease you about those types of things. I started cutting up the carrots and celery while my mom got the breadcrumbs and cranberries. Iââ¬â¢d occasionally ask why donââ¬â¢t you measure anything and it was always the same answer ââ¬Å"because I know by eyeballing itâ⬠. Next she had me stuff this bread crumby mush into the turkey. Then Covered him in butter, salt, and lemon pepper and it was ready to go into the oven. She smiled and said I did a great job. The rest of the stuff was easy squash, potatoes, corn, and green beans. That day I found a new respect for my mom and cooking. She always made every ones plate knowing the portions and dishes we all would want. Now I always help her with the cooking for every occasion and have even tweaked some of he recipes to put my own spin on them. I cant wait for the day that I make my mother a whole dinner and amaze her like she has amazed me through the years.

Absolutism During the pre-Enlightenment period, France and England went through very dramatic and very different government change. At the beginning of this time period, England had achieved relative stability, due largely in part to Elizabeth I long and successful reign. On the other hand, France had been subjected to numerous civil and religious wars, therefore leading to instability. French absolutism was largely a result of these crises and tragedies, with the country recognizing the need for a strong, powerful leader, which they found during the long and successful reign of Louis XIV. In England however, many problems arose due to a series of short and incapable rulers, beginning with James I and ending with James II. During Louis XIVââ¬â¢s reign, he was able to create a strong and stable absolute state by controlling the French nobility. Previously, during Louis XIII reign, the nobility had a great deal of power, and the French government was not centralized. Instead, the nobles acted as the middlemen, regulating the taxes and military of the French regions. The peasants paid taxes directly to the nobles, who kept a certain portion for themselves and then paid the remainder to the King. Individual regions raised and paid for their own armies; when the king required military help, the army came from these semi-private sources. Religiously, the state was also controlled by the nobles due to the Edict of Nantes, which gave the nobles the power to determine the religion of their lands. These factors lead to a divided French state, which reduced the power of Louis XIII. France was subjected to various civil wars and wars of religion, and the future king, Louis XIV, witnessing this period of unrest, vowed to impleme... ...V had achieved, and the English people feared their religious freedom was being jeopardized. These circumstances would then lead to Englandââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Glorious Revolution,â⬠which would take on the unpopular monarchy and defeat it, thereby putting William and Mary in the English throne. France and England underwent very different changes during the seventeenth century. While France transformed from an instability, war-torn country to a united, prosperous nation, England did just the opposite. Franceââ¬â¢s success can be largely attributed to Louis XIV long reign, and Englandââ¬â¢s decline was caused by a series of short rules by vastly different rulers. The rise of absolutism in France proved Louisââ¬â¢s power over his people, and the rise of constitutionalism and parliamentary power in France was due to monarchial weaknesses and strained relations between the two governing bodies.

Hunters in the Snow Essay
Friendship. What does it mean? I believe that friendship means that youââ¬â¢re there for a person no matter what and if they are in need then you would do anything to help them out. Hunters in the Snow doesnââ¬â¢t exactly define friendship. If anything it defines betrayal. Throughout this short story some of the characters do actions to their ââ¬Å"friend.â⬠Betrayal and loyalty is kind of the theme throughout the story and it makes a person think about who their real friends are. In Hunters in the Snow, Kenny, Tub, and Frank are all supposed to be friends, but through a couple series of events make a person wonder what exactly friendship means to them. Each one of the characters has certain traits that can lead them to betray them. Towards the end of the story, the reader starts to feel sorry for Kenny after Tub and Frank leave him in the back of the pickup while they go eat pancakes, then Frank and Tub ââ¬Å"accidentallyâ⬠make a wrong turn so they couldnââ¬â¢t get Kenny to hospital in time after being shot. Lack of loyalty also leads to betrayal in this short story. In the beginning, Tub and Kenny were pretty good friends, but towards the end, Kenny is almost the outcast when Tub and Frank just leave him in the back of the truck wounded while they stop and eat. Betrayal and loyalty is a key characteristic that is portrayed in Hunters in the Snow. After reading this short story it really makes on person think about the characteristics they look for in their friends. Throughout this short story it was pretty obvious that all three of the main characters lack characteristics of being a good friend, but they are all very good at backstabbing their ââ¬Å"friendsâ⬠.

This can also be observed in our present Western world, where higher education can be gained with capitalist power, meaning money. If we regard this issue from the global point of view, on can see how our Western world exhaust the 3rd world, and keep it down in order to profit from their cheap working forces. This withholding of knowledge gives the Western states a position of enforcing its imperialistic politics on other populations. Moreover the knowledge is also essential to express criticism, which is not being in given in these backward countries. In the Iraq for example, a whole population is being oppressed by a corrupt and oppressive regime; however, instead of opposing the regime on the streets or express a sense of resistance, the whole population is fascinated by the leader and adores him. This would truly not have been possible with a decent amount of education. On the other hand one has to say that in a country such as Iraq, objective reporting are overshadowed by the highly subjective, the regime supporting propaganda reporting; due to the lack of education the brought masses are very accessible for such kind of information. What it basically makes clear is that without an objective education, criticism is impossible and prejudice is indoctrinated. Without education, a human being cannot differentiate if something is right or wrong; thus it just accepts its situation and becomes vulnerable to leaders or regimes, which can then impose their ideology upon the individual. We find a similar situation in Bernd Shawââ¬â¢s play ââ¬ËPygmalionââ¬â¢, where the lower Strata (in this case symbolized by Eliza) is not able to express any criticism due to her lack of knowledge; in a nai ve, non-critical way she accepts everything that is being told her. The quote of Higgins ââ¬Å"Oh thatââ¬â¢ll be all right. Iââ¬â¢ve taught her to speak properly; and she has strict orders as to her behaviour. Sheââ¬â¢s to keep to two subjects: the weather and everybodyââ¬â¢s health- (â⬠¦ )â⬠demonstrates how Elizabeth is being reduced to a common object in a experiment comparable to a rat in a laboratory. This inability to express critics on the way she is being treated emerges from her lack of knowledge how to speak properly and so lack of education. Taking this idea one step further, lack of education can consequently result in the transforming of a human being in a mindless machine; a human beingââ¬â¢s is character and personality is defined through its experience on various areas of knowledge, which is gained by education. If this intellectualism is being suppressed, a society becomes vulnerable towards underhand manipulation by an intellectually more advanced minority that dazzles the people with the utopian idea of salvation and an improvement of their live conditions. Again we can observe this at out present society, thus in another way. Christian values are the basics of our society; laws like ââ¬Å"You shall not killâ⬠make a social living-together possible. These basics are being taught virtually from birth on. So we here have the example of how education is a pillar of our society, upon everything is based. Summing everything up, in conclusion it can be stated that education is essential for any individual; if there is none, no right/wrong discussion can emerge and so no criticism. This circumstance can be used by regimes to use education as a powerful and highly effective tool to manipulate a population. Doubtlessly education enforces prejudice; however to what extend this is objectively assessed or just imposed on an individual, that has nothing else to believe in, depends on the governing regime. In communism for example people are brainwashed and subjective beliefs are institutionalised upon them; however, to gain the ability to express criticism or an opinion and so prevent oppression, education is essential. The insidious increase of ignorant stupidity, caused by the malign influence of individuals/groups is the disease infiltrating a society and can only be fought with objective education.

Instead of flat shapes like circles, squares, and triangles, solid geometry deals with spheres, cubes, and pyramids (along with any other three dimensional shapes).And instead of using perimeter and area to measure flat shapes, solid geometry uses surface area and volume to measure its three dimensional shapes. A circleis a flat object. This is plane geometry. A sphere is a three-dimensional object. This is solid geometry. On the ACT, most of the solid geometry problems are located at the end of the mathsection. This means solid geometry problemsare considered some of the more challenging questions (or ones that will take the longest amount of time, as they often need to be completed in multiple pieces).Use this knowledgeto direct your study-focus to the most productive avenues. If you are getting several questions wrong on the first 40 questions in themath section, it might be more productive for you to take the time to first refresh your overall understanding of the math concepts covered by the ACT. Typical Solid Geometry Questions on the ACT Before we go through the formulas you'll need to tacklesolid geometry, it's important to familiarize yourself with the kinds of questions the ACT will ask you about solids. ACT solid geometry questions will appear in two formats: questions in which you are given adiagram, and word problem questions. No matter the format, each type of ACT solid geometry questionexiststotestyour understanding of the volume and/or surface area of a figure. You will be asked how to find the volume or surface area of a figure or you'll be asked to identify how a shape's dimensions shift and change. Diagram Problems A solid geometry diagram problem will provide you with a drawingof a geometrical solid and ask you to find a missing element of the picture. Sometimes they will ask you to find the volume of the figure, the surface area of the figure, or the distance between two points on the figure. They may alsoask you to compare the volumes, surface areas, or distances of several different figures. We'll go through how to solve it later in the guide. Solid geometry word problemscan be confusing to many people, because it can be difficult to visualize the question without apicture. As always with word problems that describe shapes or angles, make the drawing yourself! Simplybeing able to seewhat a question is describing can do wonders to help clarify the question. Overall Every solid geometry question on the ACT is concerned with either the volume or surface area of a figure, or the distance between two points on a figure. Sometimes you'll have to combine surface area and volume, sometimes you'll have to compare two solids to one another, but ultimately all solid geometry questions boil down to these concepts. So now let's go through our ACT math tips on how to find volumes, surface areas, and distances of all the different geometric solids. A perfect example of geometric solidsin the wild Prisms A prism is a three dimensional shape that has (at least) two congruent, parallel bases. Basically, you could pick up a prism and carry it with its opposite sides lying flat against your palms. A few of the many different kinds of prisms. Rectangular Solids A rectangular solid is essentially a box. It has three pairs of opposite sides that are congruent and parallel. Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = lwh$ The volume of a figure is the measure of its interior space. $l$ is the length of the figure $w$ is the width of the figure $h$ is the height of the figure Notice how this formula is the same as findingthe area of the square ($A = lw$) with the added dimension of height, as this is a three dimensional figure. First, identify the type of questionis it asking for volume or surface area? The question asksabout the interior space of a solid, so it's a volume question. Now we need to finda rectangular volume, but this question is somewhat tricky. Notice that we're finding out how much water is in a particular fish tank, but the water does not fill up the entire tank. If we just focus on the water, we would find that it has a volume of: $V = lwh$ = $(4)(3)(1) = 12\cubic\feet$ (Why did we multiply the feet and width by 1 instead of 2? Because the water only comes up to 1 foot; it does not fill up the entire 2 feet of height of the tank) Nowwe are going to put that 12 cubic feet of water into a second tank. This second tank has a total volume of: $V = lwh$ = $(3)(2)(4) = 24\cubic\feet$ Although the second tank can hold 24 cubic feet of water, we are only putting in 12. So $12/24 = 1/2$. The water will come up at exactly half the height of the second tank, which means the answer is D, 2 feet. Either way, those fish won't be very happy in half a tank of water Surface Area Necessary to know $\Surface\area = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh$ In order to find the surface area of a rectangular prism, you are finding the areas for all the flat rectangles on the surface of the figure (the faces) and then adding those areas together. In a rectangular solid, there are six faces on the outside of the figure. They are divided into three congruent pairs of opposite sides. If you find it difficult to picture surface area, remember that a die has six sides. So you are finding the areas of the three combinations of length, width, and height ($lw$, $lh$, and $wh$), which you then multiply by two because there are two sides for each of these combinations.The resulting areas are then all added together to getthe surface area. Diagonal Length Necessary to know (Note: it will be necessary for you to know how to find the diagonal, but you don't have to memorize the formula. Continue reading for more details on this.) $\Diagonal = âËÅ¡[l^2 + w^2 + h^2]$ The diagonal of a rectangular solid is the longest interior line ofthe solid. It touches from the corner of one side of the prismto the opposite corner on the other. You can find this diagonal by either using the above formula or by breaking up the figure into two flat triangles and using the pythagorean theorem for both. You can always do this is you do not want to memorize the formula or if you're afraid of mis-remembering the formula on test day. First, find the length of the diagonal (hypotenuse) of the base of the solid using the pythagorean theorem. $c^2 = l^2 + w^2$ Next, use that length as one of the smaller sides of a new triangle with the diagonal of the rectangular solid as the new hypotenuse. $d^2 = c^2 + h^2$ And solve for the diagonal using the pythagorean theorem again. Cubes Cubes are a special type of rectangular solid, just like squares are a special type of rectangle A cubehasa height, length, and width that are all equal. The six faces on a cube's surface are also all congruent. Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = s^3$ $s$ is the length of the side of a cube (any side of the cube, as they are all the same). This is the same thing as finding the volume of a rectangular solid ($v = lwh$), but, because their sides are all equal, you can simplify it by saying $s^3$. First, identify what the question is asking you to do. You're trying to fit smallerrectangles into a larger rectangle, so you're dealing with volume, not surface area. Find the volume of the larger rectangle (which in this case is a cube): So you can use the formula for the volume of a cube: $\Volume = s^3$ = $6^3 = 216$ Or you can use the formula to find the volume of any rectangular solid: $\Volume = lwh$ = $(6)(6)(6) = 216$ Now find the volume of one of the smaller rectangular solids: $\Volume = lwh$ = $(3)(2)(1) = 6$ And divide the larger rectangular solid by the smaller to find out how many of the smaller rectangular solids can fit inside the larger: $216/6 = 36$ So your final answer is D, 36 SurfaceArea Necessary to know $\Surface\area = 6s^2$ This is the same formulas as the surface area for a rectangular solid ($SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2hw$). Because all the sides are the same in a cube, you can see how $6s^2$ was derived: $2lw + 2lh + 2hw$ = $2ss + 2ss + 2ss$ = $2s^2 + 2s^2 + 2s^2$ = $6s^2$ You can approach this question in two ways: by using the formula or by doing it out longhand. This is the exact same process as finding the diagonal of a rectangular solid. First, find the length of the diagonal (hypotenuse) of the base of the solid using the pythagorean theorem. Next, use that length as one of the smaller sides of a new triangle with the diagonal of the rectangular solid as the new hypotenuse. Solve for the diagonal using the pythagorean theorem again. Cylinders A cylinder is a prism with two circular bases on its opposite sides Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = Ãâ¬r^2h$ $Ãâ¬$ is the universal constant, also represented as 3.14(159) $r$ is the radius of the circular base. It is any straight line drawn from the center of the circle to the circumference of the circle. $h$ is the height of the circle. It is the straight line drawn connecting the two circular bases. This problemgives you the formula for a cylinder, but the ACT is often inconsistent about this. Notice that this is problem #29 (an easy-medium level question), so you are given the formula. If this had been question #49, you would likely not have been given the formula. But because you are given the formula, it's easy toplug in your values into it. Pay attention, however, to exactly what the question is asking you to do. Just like with the fish tank question above, you are not being asked to fill up the whole container with water, only some of it. So if $\volume =Ãâ¬r^2h$, then $V =Ãâ¬(12^2)(5)$ (The radius is 12 because radius is half the diameter and the full diameter is 24. The height is 5 because the question tells us that we are only filling up the container to 5 feet). $V = 720Ã⬠= 2,261.9448$ So the answer is C,2,262 Surface Area $\Surface\area = 2Ãâ¬r^2 +2Ãâ¬rh$ To find the surface area of a cylinder, you are adding the volume of the two circular bases ($2Ãâ¬r^2$), plus the surface of the tube as if it were unrolled ($2Ãâ¬rh$). The surface of the tube can also be written as $SA = Ãâ¬dh$, because the diameter is twice the radius. In other words, the surface of the tube is the formula for the circumference of a circle with the additional dimension of height. Non-Prism Solids Non-prism solids are shapes in three dimensions that do not have any parallel, congruent sides. If you picked these shapes up with your hand, a maximum ofone side (if any) would lie flat against your palm. Cones A cone is similar to a cylinder, but has only one circular base instead of two. Its opposite end terminates in a point, rather than a circle. There are two kind of conesright cones and oblique cones. For the purposes of the ACT, you only have to concern yourself with right cones. Oblique cones will never appear on the ACT. A right cone has an apex (the terminating point on top) that sits directly above the center of the coneââ¬â¢s circular base. When a height ($h$) is dropped from the apex to the center of the circle, it makes a right angle with the circular base. Volume $\Volume = 1/3Ãâ¬r^2h$ $Ãâ¬$ is a constant, written as 3.14(159) $r$ is the radius of the circular base $h$ is the height, drawn at a right angle from the coneââ¬â¢s apex to the center of the circular base The volume of a cone is $1/3$ the volume of a cylinder. This makes sense logically, as a cone is basically a cylinder with one base collapsed into a point. So a coneââ¬â¢s volume will be less than that of a cylinder. Surface Area $\Surface\area = Ãâ¬r^2 + pirl$ $l$ is the length of the side of the cone extending from the apex to the circumference of the circular base The surface area is the combination of the area of the circular base ($Ãâ¬r^2$) and the lateral surface area ($Ãâ¬rl$) Because right cones make a right triangle with side lengths of: $h$, $l$, and $r$, you can often use the pythagorean theorem to solve problems. Pyramids Pyramids are geometric solids that are similar to cones, except that they have a polygon for a base and flat, triangular sides that meet at an apex. There are many types of pyramids, defined by the shape of their base and the angle of their apex, but for the sake of the SAT, you only need to concern yourself with right, square pyramids. A right, square pyramid has a square base (each side has an equal length) and an apex directly above the center of the base. The question is most often a test ofYouââ¬â¢ll often have to know the solid geometry principles and formulas for each shape individually to be able to put them together. When dealing with inscribed shapes, draw on the diagram they give you. If they donââ¬â¢t give you a diagram, make your own!By drawing in your own lines, youââ¬â¢ll be better able to translate the three dimensional objects into a series of two dimensional objects, which will more often than not lead you to your solution. Understand that when you are given a solid inside another solid, it is for a reason. It may look confusing to you, but the ACT will always give you enough information to solve a problem. For example, the same line will have a different meaning for each shape, and this is often the key to solving the problem. So we have an inscribed solid and no drawing. So first thing's first, make your drawing! Now because we have a sphere inside a cube, you can see that the radius of the sphereis always half the length of any side of the cube (because a cube by definition has all equal sides). So $2r$ is the length of all the sides of the cube. Now plug $2r$ into your formula for finding the volume of a cube. You can either use the cube volume formula: $V = s^3$ = $(2r)^3 = 8r^3$ Or you can use the formula to find the volume of any rectangular solid: $V = lwh$ = $(2r)(2r)(2r) = 8r^3$ Either way, you getthe answer E,$8r^3$ Notice how answer B is $2r^3$. This is a trick answer designed to trap you. If you didn't use parentheses properly in your volume of a cube formula, you would have gotten $2r^3$. But if you understand that each side length is $2r$ and so that entire length must be cubed, then you will get the correct answer of $8r^3$. For the vast majority of inscribed solids questions, the radius (or diameter) of thecircle will be the key to solving the question.The radiusof the sphere will be equal to half the length of the side of a cube if the cube is inside the sphere (as in the question above). This means that the diameter of the sphere will be equal to one side of the cube, because the diameter is twice the radius. But what happens when you have a sphere inside a cube? In this case, the diameter of the sphere actually becomes the diagonal of the cube. These themes were based on the ââ¬Å"VIP Model,â⬠which was proposed by Mark Hollingworth (2003, p. 34). According to Hollingworth, a true leader is i n fact a ââ¬ËVIP,ââ¬â¢ which stands for ââ¬ËVisionary, Implementer, and a People Managerââ¬â¢. These three primary leadership traits, in the light of other theories as well, will be mostly explored in this portfolio. Various other themes, such as handling parent-staff interactions, curriculum setting, goals of the center, etc. were also considered, but after careful consideration, it was deduced that Hollingworthââ¬â¢s three categories encompasses majority of the themes. Ishmael says nothing about the causes of the war, or what each side was fighting for, or of the overall political and social conditions in Sierra Leone that caused the war. This was a deliberate strategy on the part of Beah, the author. He wanted to present the war through the eyes of a child. As a boy of twelve, when the war first affected him, he had no interest in politics. He had no reason to be interestedââ¬âhis main interest, understandably for a boy of his age, was in singing and dancing to rap music and hanging out with his friends. When the war comes to him, it is for him a battle for personal survival, not a political cause. He is also fueled by feelings of revengeââ¬âinstilled into him by his army officersââ¬âagainst the rebels because they killed his family. Once again, these are personal feelings not political beliefs. For the reader, then, transported to a land he or she knows nothing about (for the American reader, that is), the war seems not only almost unimaginably brutal but also meaningless. It consists of one side mindlessly killing the other, and vice versa, in skirmishes in small villages. Ishmael does report Lieutenant Jabatiââ¬â¢s speeches to his men, in which he says they are defending their country (ââ¬Å"We kill them [the rebels] for the good and betterment of this countryâ⬠[p. 123]), but such appeals to patriotism are not what inspire Ishmael. Ishmaelââ¬â¢s ignorance of politics is again stressed when he is in Freetown during his rehabilitation and sees a convoy of cars and military vans. He is told that the new president, Tejan Kabbah, who had won an election eight months earlier is passing by. ââ¬Å"I had never heard of this man,â⬠Ishmael writes pointedly. This confirms the tenor of the book as a whole: Ishmael is a boy caught up in a war he knows nothing about for a cause he does not care about. 2.Why was the war fought and what course did it take? During the 1980s Sierra Leone was a one-party state governed by the All-Peopleââ¬â¢s Congress (APC) party. However, this period was marked by extensive government corruption and abuse of power. Although Sierra Leone is rich in natural resources it became one of the poorest countries in the world because of mismanagement. The civil war in neighboring Liberia helped to create conditions for war in Sierra Leone because a Liberian war leader reportedly sponsored the rebel group called the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) as a way of destabilizing Sierra Leone, which at the time was a base for a United Nations peacekeeping force. The war broke out in 1991 in villages in eastern Sierra Leone that were near the Liberian border. The aim of the RUF was to seize and control the diamond sector, and in 1991 it took control of the diamond mines in the Kono district. (It is the mining area around Ishmaelââ¬â¢s home town of Mogbwemo that the rebels seize in 1993.) In 1992 a military coup took place that established the National Provisional Ruling Council, replacing the civilian government. However, the new military government was powerless to prevent the RUF from controlling much of the country. It was the years immediately after this, from 1993 to January 1996, that Ishmael was a soldier. The war continued after Ishmael was rescued from it, as he himself found out when he went to stay with his uncle in Freetown after his rehabilitation. There had been an election in April 1996, and a civilian government had taken power, but in May 1997 there was another military coup, and the new military government known as the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) invited the RUF to participate in it. The following year, when Beah was safely in the United States, the military government was ousted and the civilian government restored. But this did not stop the violence as the AFRC and its RUF allies fought to regain power. Fighting returned to Freetown in 1999, before a peace accord was signed in July 1999. But this did not last, and the war dragged on, finally ending in January 2002, with the civilian government in charge. According to the CIAââ¬â¢s World Factbook, the civil war resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than two million peopleââ¬âabout one-third of the population of Sierra Leone. 3.What is the situation in Sierra Leone today? According to the CIAââ¬â¢s World Factbook, Sierra Leone is gradually returning to a fully democratic government following the ravages of the civil war. There was a general election in 2007 that led to one civilian government being peacefully replaced by another. The nation has also tried to come to terms with the recent past. In 2002 the government set up a Special Court to try those responsible for war crimes during the civil war. It also set up a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The Special Court indicted many of those held responsible for the atrocities. Some died before they could be tried, but in June 2007, the Special Court found three men guilty of war crimes, including not only murder, terrorism, and enslavement but also the act of conscripting or enlisting children under fifteen into the armed forces. As refugees from the war are slowly returning from neighboring countries, the Sierra Leone government is trying to create jobs and end political corruption. Revenues from diamond mining have increased significantly since the end of the war. Diamonds account for about half of Sierra Leoneââ¬â¢s exports. However, Sierra Leone, with a population estimated in 2009 as 5,132,138, remains an extremely poor country with wide disparities in how wealth is distributed. According to the World Factbook, ââ¬Å"The fate of the economy depends upon the maintenance of domestic peace and the continued receipt of substantial aid from abroad.â⬠4.How widespread is the use of child soldiers? It would be comforting to think that the forced conscription of children into the armed forces during the war in Sierra Leone was an aberration, not something that can happen again in the modern world. However, that is not the case. Even in the twenty-first century, the use of child soldiers is common in armed conflicts around the world. According to Human Rights watch, an international nongovernmental organization, as of 2007, there were an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 children fighting in various wars. According to a Global Report published in 2008 by the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, at the end of 2007 children were used as soldiers in seventeen armed conflicts around the globe. The coalition noted that this was down from twenty-seven conflicts in 2004, but the downturn was more because the conflicts had ended than because child soldiers were no longer being recruited. The Global Report identified the following countries where children were recruited for paramilitaries, militias, civilian defense forces or armed groups linked to or supported by governments: Chad, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Iran, Ivory Coast, Libya, Myanmar, Peru, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Sudan, and Uganda. The most flagrant offender, according to the Global Report, is Myanmar, where the government uses thousands of children in its battle against rebel groups. In Uganda, tens of thousands of children have been forced into joining armies over a period of nearly twenty-five years. In some of these countries, including Uganda, girls as well as boys have been forced to become soldiers. There have in recent years been concerted international efforts to end the use of child soldiers. Sierra Leone, which has tried and convicted men responsible for recruiting child soldiers, has become a leader in this issue. The use of child soldiers has now been prohibited by international law. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict has been ratified by 120 states. The UN Security Council has adopted resolutions calling for the establishment of a monitoring mechanism on children and armed conflict. However, these and other prohibitions are no guarantee that when new conflicts break out, child soldiers will not be recruited. 5.Is Beahââ¬â¢s story factually accurate? A Long Way Gone achieved popular and critical success, but questions have been raised by some regarding the factual accuracy of a number of events Beah recounts in the book. Beah writes that his village was attacked in January 1993 and after that he became a refugee from the war. Critics claim that there are school records showing that Beah was in school later than this date, and that the village was attacked in 1995, not 1993. This would mean that Beah would actually have been recruited at the age of fifteen, not thirteen as he writes in the book. This would have meant that he was only a child soldier for a few months, rather than over two years. Some critics point to the structure of the book to confirm this. They point out that most of the book deals with Beahââ¬â¢s wanderings as a refugee and the months he spent in rehabilitation. Only two chapters (13 and 14) cover his actual experiences as a soldier (although he does present more incidents from his military service at various points in flashbacks). Questions have also been raised about the account Beah gives of the fight between the former boy soldiers at the rehabilitation home, in which several boys were killed. There are no independent reports of such a fight ever taking place. Some believe that Beah used othersââ¬â¢ experiences as his own and that he embellished his tale. They point to his interest in creative writing at Oberlin College and the fact that his adoptive mother was a storyteller. The suggestion is that Beah was encouraged by those around him to tell a more vivid story. Others have more charitably suggested that Beah simply got his dates mixed up, and his memory may have been unreliable because on his own admission he was high on drugs most of the time he was in military service. Because of many land in Indonesia opened to plant the palm oil and exceed the hectares of plantation in Malaysia, Indonesia become the largest producer in the world follow by Malaysia. It is all because of the tremendous increase in production and export volume of palm oil to fulfill the world demand of palm oil. The success story of the Malaysian Palm oil industry was due to the synergistic effort of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and the industry in carrying out RD and marketing activities. These non-stop efforts have led to higher production and exports, making palm oil always readily available in the world market. But oil palm also facing challenges in enhancing productivity, increasing workflow efficiency and maximizing profits. As the second leader in the palm oil industry, it is worthwhile monitoring the development of its crude palm oil (CPO) production and price. But the prices of palm oil not pegged by the government, it always fluctuated every time year depending on the economic condition. There are many uses of palm oil in our daily life, such as edible oil and soap. Nowadays, the value of palm oil has been increasing quickly because of the decreasing the import tariffs for palm oil and the land for palm oil plantation also increased to expand their business to produce more product of palm oil. Other than that, the Malaysian palm oil also face some effective competitive strength. There are many factor that influence the price of palm oil such as hectares of land, supply of palm oil, export of palm oil, and consumption of palm oil. But before make this research, we must obtain data from other resources to examine the model to test it with econometric model. This study will provide data for 29 years annually in terms of prices of palm oil its production, export and its consumption. Econometric model were developed to analysis the relationship between this prices of palm oil and its economic variable whether the relationship is significant or not. This economic variable test one by one to check the relationship. This study will determine by ordinary least square method to test the independent variable. LITERATURE REVIEW The previous study have been made to understand the impact of palm oil based-biodiesel demand on palm oil prices (Ramli; Roslan and Ayatollah, K 2007). Nowadays biodiesel has become an important fuel to our society. It is because of the growing concern for the environment. Demand for the biodiesel has become higher, and that effect to the volume of palm oil available in the market that putting its prices increased sharply since July 2006. That days, the prices of palm oil influenced by the stock, supply, production. From July 2006 onwards, biofuel become a serious fuel of his renewable production. Biodiesel mainly from palm has increased the demand and altered the economics of palm oil. This study using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA). This method have been proven to forecast the palm oil prices from July 2006 to end 2007. Supporting to this journal, the prices of petroleum and vegetable oil down to be moving slowly together. (Anna Awad, Fatimah, 2009). This previous studies have been made to find the long term relationship the prices of crude oil and vegetable oil. They using the Engle-Granger two-stage to do the method. This study use data over the period from January 1983 to March 2008. The two products show the result of the strong evidence of a long relationship. Began in the 1970s until 21 century, the price for all commodities increased between January 2000 and March 2008. The increased of the prices caused by the increased petroleum price more than 300%, while food prices increased 107% during the same period and vegetables oil increased of 192%. Besides that,(Mohd Nasir, 2003) said that Malaysia is the largest producer and Indonesia is the second largest producer. This two country is the exporter where they contribute 89.6% of palm oil trade in the world and 83.5 % of production. They also export crude palm oil (CPO) and other than that processed palm oil (PPO). The Malaysia exporting quantities of CPO increased from 0.4 million tones to 1.3 million tones in 2000 and 2001, followed by exports of Indonesian CPO increased from 1.8 to 2.0 million tones. Both country also contributed PPO which is the larger share of palm products. CPO and PPO in Malaysian were lower than Indonesia in 2001 and 2002. Both countries products imposed by the tariffs with the objectives initially raising revenue. For example, in Malaysia is to encouraging down stream while for Indonesia it reflected to consumer down. Both country have been imposed taxes on export, and there is a difference way the exports duty payable. (Ahmad Borhan and Mohd Arif, 2009) said that the prices of palm oil and it comprises crude palm oil and processed palm oil is a strong indicator of the level of palm oil stock. The stock of palm oil has been hovered around 1 million tones. With this amount, the volume has become the psychological which prices tend to be bullish and bearish, respectively. The end of stock fully depends on the export of palm oil and its production. While local consumption and import play minor roles. The Malaysian palm oil industry has estimated that 1.8 million tones could become the new level of palm oil stock. But it all based on change in the supply and demand factors. (James, 2008) said that the prices of crude palm oil (CPO) has a strong relationship with stock according to the conventional economics. The economics of oils and fats had changed in the last two years, that cause both prices and rising in tandem according to traditional economic theory. Because of created the new role played by biodiesel, the strong signs of a linkages also created. The palm oil prices should take into one account of two factors, the petroleum price and the amount of oil stocks. The price band can determines by prices of petroleum. While the stocks can show high or low palm oil prices. Malaysias economic development has indeed been impressive by the contribution of the palm oil industry. In the previous journal, (Mohd Basri, Mohd Arif, and Jamil, 2008) said that in the past, there have been spikes in the palm oil prices, especially to the demand and supply imbalance of oils and fats. But since mid 2006, spikes have become more sustained. Besides that, spikes also been attributed to the supply and demand of edible oils and fats and also to the increasing demand for the fuel. Because of the increased of palm oil, the demand curve shifted to the right. The prices of oils have been increased slightly. (Ayat K Faizah, Ramli Abdullah and Nurul Hufaidah, 2007) study on how to examines volatility spill over. The study focus on between the domestic prices of palm oil and what major factor to the prices volatility. From the research, palm oil has moderate price volatility. And effort should be made to sustained the price of crude palm oil (CPO) to minimize volatility in other prices caused of the prices of (CPO) become a price leader among the other palm oil products. There was a model to developed to forecast prices of palm oil products in domestic. (Ramli and Mohd Alias, 2006). Malaysia also known the worlds biggest exporter of the palm oil and associated with palm oil. Because of the largest exporter the world, it become important for the country to lead the commoditys production and its price and can be used to determine the country revenue or in process of decision making. The study comes out with the conceptual model of the Malaysian palm oil market model, such as the palm oil supply, oil palm area, imports and exports of palm oil products, domestic consumption, domestic price relationship and stocks IntermediationConceptual Framework. There are production (supply), export, consumption and land area in hectares. This independent variable also can support the price of palm oil. Production can influences the prices of palm oil by the supply in the market, the more supply in the market, the more it can influences the prices of palm oil. It mean that, if the supply exceed the demand of the market, many unit of production are waste because of the demand not equal to the unit of production in the market. So to increase the demand in the market, firm can reduces prices of the production in order to attract the demand of the market. Low prices of the production can increased the demand of the production in the market. Export also can influences the prices of palm oil in the market by having a export more than import in the market can make a country deficit in terms of profit. Same like production, but export trade in other country and make a international business in order to gain profit. If have much demand in palm oil from other country, it means that, we should export more to achieved the demand from other country. From this situation, our country can take advantages to increase the prices of palm oil respectively. Consumption also can influences the prices of palm oil. It depends on how the consumer fully utilized the use of palm oil. If the consumer already knew the use of the palm oil, easy to them to know how important the palm oil in our society. Because of that, the consumer will ask for the palm oil and directly increased the demand for palm oil. Other than that, land area of plantation also can influences the prices of palm oil. If we plant more trees of palm oil in land, we are producing more palm oil in the market. If the supply of the palm oil in the market exceed than demand, than many surplus to that product. So to overcome this problem, firm must reduced the prices of palm oil to attract consumer to buy the palm oil. But it is good to the firm if the demand more than supply, then the firm can increased the price of palm oil in order to gain profit. Dependent variable The price of palm oil is depend to this four factor, this four factor can influences the prices of palm oil whether wants to increased or decreased. DATA METHODOLOGY LEAST SQUARE METHOD (SINGLE REGRESSION) and (MULTIPLE REGRESSION) The framework developed in this study is drawn both from econometric method (which is based on the economic theory) and the system dynamics approach. This section discusses the econometric model using least square method. Its to correlate and examine the relationships among dependent variable and independent variable. It is a economic theory form with statistical methods. Factor determinants of prices of palm oil in Ringgit Malaysia (RM). consists of 4 factor that influence the price of palm oil, there are production (supply), export in tones, consumption of palm oil and land area of plantation of palm oil in hectares. The first step is finding time series data from 1980 to 2009, which influence the price of palm oil to make a research and then describe it according to the econometric model. To regress the econometric model we must use the data which influence the prices of palm oil. So this 4 factor is the important data to make a research. After regress, we can identified relationship between dependent and independent variables. These 4 factor also known as independent variable and price of palm oil also known as dependent variable which price of palm oil depend on this 4 independent variable whether to increase or decrease. The prices of palm always fluctuate depend on this 4 independent variable. To test this independent variable had a relationship between price or not, the econometric model by using least square method use to test one by one of this independent variable whether this independent variable has a relationship between dependent variable. After test this econometric model, we look to the T-statistics, R-squared, Durbin-Watson stat. if t-stat are less than 2, this means that there is no relationship between independent variable and dependent variable and also known as is not significant. If more than 2, there is a relationship between independent variable and dependent variable. After test one by one, we should regress all dependent variable using multiple regress because of explanatory variable is more than one to check whether all independent variable significant or not. 4. Before regress the data using first difference, we must log all the data to make the probability below than 0.005, in order to make the data significant. After regress, we found that only probability for Dlnexp less than 0.005. Mean that only dlnexp significant and other independent variable not significant because over than 0.005. Other independent variable not significant because of multicollinearity and autocorrelation problem. Multicollinearity defined that, there is no linear relationships among the explanatory variables. Autocorrelation can be defined as correlation between members of observations ordered in time (as in time series data) CONCLUSION AND RESULT Malaysian is the second producer in the world who produce palm oil. These production can improved our country economy by exporting the palm oil market to other country because our country contribute 89.6 of palm oil trade in the world. Palm oil have many used in our daily life, used of palm oil influence the demand of palm oil in market. More demand of palm oil in market, more increased the price of palm oil per tones. After finished doing this proposal, there are 4 factor that determinant the price of palm oil in Malaysian palm oil market. This 4 factor are production of palm oil, export of palm oil, consumption of palm oil and hectares of plantation of palm oil. This 4 factor test one by one to check whether there is a relationship between this factor to the price. To test it, we use least square method in econometrics. And this all four factor can influence the price of palm oil because t-statistic more than 2. Multiple regression also has been test, and only one independent variable was significant and other independent variable not significant.
